On Saturday [instagram.com profile] sashagee and I went apple-picking at Kuiper's Family Farm!

2020-09-12 - Kuiper trip Sasha Picking an apple

There was barely anyone there when we arrived, maybe a couple dozen people, and they were all concentrated in the main shop building. When we went over to the "U-Pick" entrance there was one family there waiting for admittance and no one at all in the orchard, so after a brief explanation they turned us loose. This was the very first apple we picked, in the Honeycrisp section. After picking it we ate it, because the best part was that they told us we could eat as many apples as we wanted and just throw the cores under the trees for more fertilizer. We definitely took advantage of that.

The nice thing about there being so few people on the farm is that I could capture [instagram.com profile] sashagee's smile. Emoji Kawaii heart

2020-09-12 - Kuiper trip rainy day

It rained basically all last week, but that wasn't going to stop us. When we arrived it was very lightly raining, which meant there was a fine coat of droplets on all the apples and they tasted like they were freshly washed. We are two each of the Honeycrisp and Jonathan apples, the former sweet and the latter deliciously tart, and filled one peck bag with each variety. We bought an apple bread recipe kit from the store and we're going to use these apples to make it, if we don't eat them all first.

2020-09-12 - Kuiper trip perfect apple

This was obviously taken after we got home, but I had to capture the picture perfect "apple with leaf" apple I picked. They told us to hold onto the branch and twist up to take off the apple, and when I did that a little bit of the branch came off. Very high 🍎🍏 energy.

We rarely have the same day off, so both of us having a Saturday off was a special treat. Even though half the farm was closed and we couldn't go to the pumpkin patch or corn maze, we had a great time. We'll be back before the end of the season.

Growing honey crisp at a you-pick apple farm? That seems like a risky move, and I admire them a bit for it. Honeycrisp apples are quite susceptible to a cosmetic issue called Bitter Pit, and since consumers don't buy apples with little sunken black spots, a lot of them end up as juice. I would have thought a U-pick place would have even stronger pressure for picture-perfect apples.

Glad you had fun!
